There are lots of issues around children’s Maths learning that stops them from gaining a beautiful experience of Maths. These problems that affect children’s progress with Maths I group under three main categories:
1. The first one is that many parents have children who hate Maths, find it boring, think it sucks, or think it’s a chore. They do not understand why they have to study Maths and what they will really use it for in future. These kids are withdrawn and aloof in Maths classes and when they have to do homework. They actually have to do arguably work more than the kids who are good at Maths, because they spend more time and more effort trying to understand it. The more you understand Maths, the easier it gets!
2. The second problem is that many children think that they cannot get good at Maths. They don’t believe that they have the innate abilities needed to get good at Maths and numbers. To them, it looks like a crazy dream that is simply wishful thinking. Many parents also accept this thought or idea too easily, usually because they feel they are not good at Maths themselves.
3. The third problem I see is that many children don’t have, or are not exposed to, effective, creative or fun ways to get Maths practice. So Maths becomes a problem that they are dreading. They get ‘Maths anxiety’ which manifests in a variety of ways such as detachment where the subject is concerned, faster heart rates, an inability to connect with the teacher or with the subject, and some have nightmares from just even the thought of Maths. This leads to a bigger question: but how can your children live without Maths? As parents we have a responsibility to support our children in the necessary ways to help them start loving Maths, or loving Maths more.
