It was such a great privilege, honour, and delight for me to be such a strong and positive voice in a specialist field (software programming) that historically has had few females or women. I was often the only woman in every team, in most cases. In one or two cases, there was only one other woman. I was always in the minority. This situation came with its own challenges and prejudice. Talk about the combined challenge of being a young female programmer in a male-dominated investment banking industry and being part of a minority! Hardly the stereotype.
You couldn’t cope in the environment I was in without self-confidence and I can share that this stemmed from my father who helped me hugely with my math(s) at school. My Dad helped me realise that I CAN DO Math(s). Gently, prodding, pushing me a little further, challenging me, and motivating me with actual incentives if I achieved some practical, fun things he set for me each time. Little by little, my confidence grew.
My confidence grew, my successes came and I knew that I could help other children to have the same experience.
Because of my ongoing passion to help children increase math(s) confidence and reach their potential, I became involved in a few other education and math(s)-related not-for-profit roles. For example, I am now a “National Numeracy Challenge Champion.” National Numeracy is a charity that helps spread the word about raising adult numeracy levels in the UK.
I am also a speaker and volunteer for “Inspiring the Future and Inspiring Women” (also a not-for-profit organisation). Here, we are tasked with periodic visitations to schools in order to raise awareness among children and youths about how math(s) and schoolwork link to careers in future. These programmes aim to widen the horizons and aspirations of school children, thus inspiring them to connect their learning to their future.
Now as the Chair of the Board of Governors of a primary school in my local area, and as the Chair of the Finance Committee, I am able to work effectively in my role as the Governor in charge of Creative Curriculum for the school. Furthermore, my involvement in Education and my math(s)-related not-for-profit roles have accorded me the privilege of serving as a Trustee and Director of one of a Central London University’s boards. I am grateful to have been a recipient of several national and international merit awards, including two UK Women National Awards.
