I do sincerely hope that once your child (and maybe even you, as an adult) starts believing more in the importance of math(s) fundamental skills, you will also come to share my appreciation for the many ways in which math(s) is truly beautiful.
Fundamental, basic math(s) is one of very few subjects that is exact. It is the same “language,” no matter your origin, background, gender, race, or geographical location. It is an elegant language, too, and always delivers the same answer. You can know very clearly and concretely whenever your answer is correct. It’s hard to say that about an essay, composition, literature, or a history comprehension exercise.
I love fundamental math(s) because it is so exact!
Part of the fun of mathematics is the numerous creative ways in which to solve a given basic math(s) problem, especially with the beauty of obtaining the same answer each time—it’s lovely and flexible. So, you can use whichever path or shortcuts you prefer. At this point, your thought may be, “How would I know if I have done the work correctly?” You will know that the answer is right because, at the end, with math(s) you will reach the same sum or conclusion working backwards.
Math(s) is also a clear, elegant way to describe almost everything in our universe, from the arrangement of our atoms to the capacity of the smallest cells, from the symmetry of leaves and plants to the workings of the stars and galaxies. Math(s) explains music, the waves in the ocean, and even the proportions in fine art. It’s fundamental to everything.
You can see that I just LOVE math(s) and want to share this love with you and your child.
