Keeping an open mind and having the right mindset are the prerequisites for finding real math(s) solutions. I am going to share some thoughts to debunk some myths and notions surrounding parents’ beliefs and psychology.
There are several myths surrounding the learning of math(s), the most common are:
- Some people were born with ‘math(s) brains’ or have ‘math(s) brains’
- You have to be a “math(s) person” in order to know math(s) and be able to help your child
- Children learning math(s) are generally taught what they do not need
- Girls are not good at math(s)
To elucidate my thoughts on these, it is important that I show you that you can successfully help your child:
Be happy at school, which builds more self-confidence and self-worth, generating great comments and praise.
Learn to like math(s), understand it, and ultimately become comfortable solving math(s) problems
The importance of having the right mindset cannot be overemphasized, as this will reflect on your child. Take a moment to read and reflect on the quotes below.
‘Watch your thoughts; for they become words. Watch your words; for they become actions. Watch your actions; for they become habits. Watch your habits; for they become character. Watch your character for it will become your destiny.’ ~ Frank Outlaw
‘Believe you can and you’re halfway there.’ ~ Theodore Roosevelt
